WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT
My approach to therapy places a strong emphasis on the therapeutic relationship, as the quality of relationship between therapist and patient is the single most important factor determining the success of any therapy. Therefore, in the first couple of sessions, you can expect that I will make every effort to understand what difficulties bring you to therapy and how I can help, as well as how comfortable you feel talking with me. This includes a feeling of being able to speak openly and honestly about as much as you would like.
An immediate effect of therapy is often relief. This comes from a feeling of being able to speak freely and be heard deeply. Sessions become a place where previously unsaid thoughts and feelings can find an audience. In order for this to happen the atmosphere must be one of compassion, and free of judgment and coercion. This means that I will not determine your goals for you and I will not impose an agenda of my own upon you. Rather, we will work together to identify and realize your goals.
I often meet with someone seeking therapy for 1-2 initial consultation appointments. This is to provide each of us a chance to gain more understanding of what problems bring one to therapy, how therapy may help and how well we feel we will work together. After these initial appointments it is usually much more clear how best to proceed, including the frequency and scheduling of therapy sessions.
